YOUTH FOR EUROPE

A visit to the European Parliament can provide students with a unique opportunity to learn and develop a range of important skills, both personally and professionally.

  1. Knowledge of European Politics and Governance: Students will gain a better understanding of how the European Union works, the roles and responsibilities of the European Parliament and how decisions are made at the European level.
  2. Critical Thinking Skills: By observing the legislative process within the Parliament, students will be encouraged to think critically and analyse various perspectives on European issues. This can stimulate the development of independent thinking.
  3. Understanding Cultural Diversity: The European Parliament brings together Members of Parliament from all corners of Europe, hence students will have the opportunity to observe how different cultures and perspectives are represented and how diversity is discussed in an international forum.
  4. Communication Skills: A visit to the European Parliament could provide students with the chance to interact with guides, Members of Parliament, staff members or even other young people from different countries, thus developing their communication skills in a multicultural context.
  5. Awareness of Rights and Civic Responsibilities: Students can learn about their rights as European citizens, the importance of civic engagement and how they can contribute to the democratic process.
  6. Interest in International Careers: Exposure to the activities of the European Parliament can spark an interest in careers in fields such as international relations, European law, foreign policy or diplomacy.

A meeting with a Member of the European Parliament would be an opportunity to learn directly about how the European Union functions, to interact with someone actively involved in the decision-making process and to better understand how policies that affect almost the entire European continent are shaped. In addition, it would provide a unique educational experience to clarify and debunk misconceptions about the interaction between European and national politics through a first-hand encounter.

Naturally, children and young people can play an important role in transmitting and spreading the ideas and values they have assimilated, hence such an experience could make them more motivated and confident in their capability to influence public opinion. Students have the potential to become opinion formers due to their enthusiasm, their ability to convey information in a simple way and their desire to impact the community they belong to. They can become a “bridge” between generations, being able to explain concepts related to the European Union to their parents or grandparents in an accessible manner. Additionally, they can share their experiences with their peers, thus contributing to the exchange of ideas and raising awareness of the importance of the EU in daily life.

Today’s youth are very familiar with technology and social media platforms. Therefore, after a visit to the European Parliament, students can share on social networks what they have learned about the EU, its institutions and their role on the continent. This can amplify the impact of their experience, reaching a much wider audience. Furthermore, our students have a high intellectual potential, an openness to the values of the EU and motivation to discover new areas of learning and experimentation. Thus, a visit to the European Parliament would not only broaden their horizons, but also provide them with the tools necessary to become active citizens, capable of participating in the European democratic life.
